It’s NOT time to change up the Triple Crown!

Justify’s romp through the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes made him racing’s 13th Triple Crown winner since Sir Barton in 1919.

But, unlike his predecessor, American Pharoah, his accomplishment came after only a three-year hiatus, not a 37-year interregnum. In those years, from 1978 through 2015, there were louder and louder calls to change the regiment of the Triple Crown, that three races in a five-week span, for young three-year-olds, was just too much.

The fact that two very different horses – albeit horses trained by the same Hall of fame trainer, Bob Baffert – can overcome those rigors proves that it is all about the horse, not the races themselves.

It remains to be seen whether Justify will race again. His connections say the Breeders’ Cup Classic in the fall is the ultimate goal, but there are many days and weeks to go until then. Will we see him at Saratoga Race Course, where American Pharoah suffered the only loss in the Travers? Or will he take on older horses in the Pacific Classic at Del Mar.

Keep your fingers crossed. This one is too good to be just another memory.
