A history columnist and longtime newspaperman was honored with the Museum of Western Colorado’s Historian Award, in the organization’s fourth-annual heritage awards earlier this month.
The event recognizes volunteers and community groups who contribute to the public’s understanding and appreciation of history in Mesa County and on the Western Slope. Bob Silbernagel, former editorial page editor of The Daily Sentinel, author and columnist, received the Historian Award this year.
Silbernagel credited his more than 35-year-long journalism career and individuals at the museum’s Loyd Files Research Library for helping him find compelling stories to tell, including the library’s volunteers and Erin Johnson Schmitz, the curator of collections and archives. His twice-monthly column, called First Draft, features interesting characters and events from history in western Colorado.
